Beats Going to the Supermarket

No joke, there is some kind of farmer's market going on every single day of the week in Annecy. The ones in the Old Village are lovely, but my favorite is the Saturday market that takes place near the Lycée Berthollet, a short wander from the Bonlieu building.

In short, it's bigger and offers more variety than the market held on Tuesdays and Fridays in the Old Village.

Fresh fruit and vegetables...

...herbs...

...fresh flowers...

... and even textiles.

I wish I had tried the peeled lemons.

And also the flat peaches.

They give you a nice big slab of cheese to taste before buying.

These look sweet and probably taste much too sweet.

Chow-chow.

I saw this man last year too.

I got a chicken leg for two euros.

Le Marrakech

Le Marrakech, a Moroccan restaurant I went to on my first night in Annecy, France.

We actually got in past closing time, but the restaurant generously kept it open for us.

The tables had already been set for the next day.

The waitress was rather crabby, but I didn't blame her a bit.

The food was wonderful, and provided a nice change from the sameness of Haute-Savoie cuisine.

The website is here. They also have a shop for takeout!

CDG

CDG=Charles de Gaulle Airport in Roissy, France, about 40 minutes away from Paris.

It may have had its share of problems, but I love its look.

Can these go on the plane?

Eurotrash alert!

Hipster alert.

Grandad and grandkid.

On the way to boarding the plane.

The airport cafeteria has hummus and moussaka. The hummus was super salty and tasted like cheese.

Bonus: the JAL-Air France codeshare flight had a delightful midflight snack. Every single thing on the tray was emblazoned with Kumamon, the official character of Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan. Kumamon's popularity in the past year or so has been absolutely explosive, and has even put Kumamoto back on the map. Surprisingly, the food itself wasn't half bad either.

Aerial Views of Europe

I was lucky enough to get a window seat on my flight to and from Tokyo and Paris. Land was no longer visible past a certain point, but France, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia could be seen quite nicely.

The neat rectangular farms, which I also saw from my Amsterdam-Tokyo flight last year, indicated this was somewhere in the Netherlands.

These plots look ruler-thin.

In France. This looks like a castle and its outer walls...or a prison...or the projects.

Flying out from Charles de Gaulle Airport on the way back.

We left around 19:30, when the sun was beginning its descent.

It's too bad that you can't actually see Paris when you head to Charles de Gaulle. Part of me was hoping that the Eiffel Tower would actually be visible.

Wind turbines in Amiens, north of Paris.

According to the map on the plane, this is near Silkebourg, Denmark.

More wind turbines around Ribe, Denmark.

Wind turbines in the water! This was between Aarhus, Denmark and Almstud, Sweden.

Around Helsinki, where the land was spotted with small bodies of water.

Seven Panorama Views of Annecy, France

Taken on the Promenade du Dr Servettaz, which faces the east side of Lake Annecy. (Click to enlarge.)

There is a small port for excursion boats on the west side of the Lake, just at the end of the Old Town. They start at around 20 euros and are highly recommended, particularly just as it is getting dark.

The boat I was on can be seen in the center of the photo. The church Saint François de Sales is visible on the left.

The west side of the lake, which has a lot of boats.

Similarly the west side.

Alongside the river Le Thiou, which runs through the Old Town and leads out of the city.

A view of the lake taken from Parc Charles Bosson.

All photos taken with the excellent Photaf app.
